Cedric M. Hammond, 40, of Belvidere.

A 40-year-old man is said to have resisted arrest during a traffic stop in McHenry County on Thursday afternoon, swallowed a bag of drugs and bitten a deputy sheriff.

Cedric M. Hammond, 40, of Belvidere, was charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, possession of a controlled substance, resisting justice resulting in bodily harm, obstruction of justice, unlawful possession of cannabis by a driver and driving without a license.

In a criminal complaint filed in McHenry County District Court, Hammond is accused of operating a vehicle without a license at approximately 1:45 p.m. Thursday.

McHenry County Sheriff's officers stopped him near Route 14 and Doty Road in Woodstock.

The complaint also states that Hammond was illegally in possession of cannabis in the passenger compartment of the car.

The complaint states that Hammond was found to be in possession of less than 15 grams of a substance containing cocaine.

Hammond ran away from deputies and then flailed his arms while resisting arrest, injuring a deputy, the complaint says.

Hammon bit a deputy on the left thumb, causing injuries, the complaint says.

The complaint states that Hammond also destroyed evidence by swallowing a plastic baggie containing a cream-colored, lumpy substance that was indicative of drugs.

He was taken to the McHenry County Jail and released after an initial court appearance on Friday because the charge does not result in incarceration under the Illinois SAFE-T Act.

McHenry County Judge Carl Metz ordered Hammond to refrain from using illegal substances and to submit to random testing.

He is scheduled to appear in court again for a preliminary hearing on October 11.
