Quite simply, Alvarez dominated the Mexican Independence Day weekend. In front of over 20,000 spectators, Alvarez defended his unified super middleweight title in a one-sided affair.

MMA & Boxing today: Canelo vs. UFC on Mexican Independence Day weekend

Alvarez nearly made Berlanga's legs give way before Berlanga landed a right hook, but nothing to stun the Mexican superstar. As the seconds ticked away, Alvarez, a 20-year veteran of the ring, walked back to his corner unfazed.

Round 3 began with Alvarez entering the center of the ring within boxing range and using the jab. Berlanga used the jab before a left hook from Alvarez sent the T-Mobile Arena into an uproar.

More devastating blows from Alvarez followed, but Berlanga stayed on his feet. With less than a minute to go, Berlanga kept his chin tucked in. A body shot from Canelo, followed by one up top, ended the round.

In round 4, Alvarez was outscoring Berlanga 42-20 when he returned to the jab. It just wasn't connecting enough as Alvarez returned with a right hand and a left hook to the liver. Alvarez led 28-11 in power punches while keeping Berlanga on the ropes. Once again, the Mexican legend couldn't land a decisive knockout blow.

Round 5 was similar. Circle, circle and more circle, Alvarez remained calm. Alvarez went to the body again, but Berlanga countered briefly. A right hand stunned Berlanga with less than a minute to go.

Joe Goossen had put Canelo up 5-0 in round 6, while MMAKO unofficially held the same lead. Alvarez went back down to start the round. Alvarez had outscored Berlanga 20-4 in the body shot category and continued to cruise toward his second win of the year.

Round 7 began with Alvarez pinning Berlanga to the ropes and narrowly out-hitting Berlanga in the jab category. Not much more happened as neither man found his footing in any sense of the word. A slip from Berlanga ended the most uneventful round of the fight.

In round 8, Berlanga returned to the jab as Alvarez was ahead 70-62 according to the unofficial scorecard. Alvarez again returned to the body, followed by some punches from Berlanga. Referee Harvey Dock called a timeout for a head kick from Berlanga, which Alvarez responded by backing him against the fence. Berlanga finished the round with a one-two combination, but it wasn't enough for the New York native to win the round.

In round 9, the same thing happened to Alvarez, but the knockout never came despite him wreaking havoc on the ropes.

Round 10 was an Alvarez clinic, where he aimed his punches primarily upward while maintaining his energy. Berlanga was visibly frustrated with Alvarez's antics, which made the moment even more heated.

Both men traded plenty of punches in round 11, but Alvarez continued to attack the body. While Berlanga held firm, Alvarez held on to the ropes and could have easily taken the KO/TKO victory with a few more seconds.

While Berlanga was loudly booed at T-Mobile Arena, the love for Alvarez was at the forefront. Both men fought their way into the ring with nearly two minutes left, and for the fifth straight fight, Alvarez had yet to land a finish. With less than 90 seconds remaining, Alvarez continued to use the jab, followed by a left hook from Berlanga. As the seconds ticked away, a right hand knocked Berlanga off balance as the unified middleweight champion celebrated his victory.
