Cal Football goes 3-0 and defeats San Diego State 31-10

The California Golden Bears (3-0) ran away San Diego State Aztecs (1-2) and finished its non-conference games with a perfect 3-0 record after a 31-10 decision on Saturday night.

Second semester Jaivian Thomas made a mark in his first start for the Golden Bears with 169 rushing yards, a career high, including a 57-yard run through the middle to State of San Diego 7 on third-and-one at the start of the third quarter. His big game set up Senior Kadarius Calloway's Three plays later, a seven-yard rushing touchdown gave the home team a 14-3 lead.

Calloway upped the ante with a blockbuster play of his own in the fourth quarter. The running back marched 60 yards down the field from his own 25-yard line on California's second drive of the final quarter. On the next play Fernando Mendoza associated with freshmen Nyziah Hunter with a short 15-yard throw to the left that put California up 31-10.

Mendoza finished the game with 198 passing yards, two touchdowns, and one interception thrown and rushed for a touchdown in the first quarter. Hunter was the signal-caller's favorite target with 52 receiving yards.

California's star running back Jayden Ott did not play because the medical staff did not declare the junior fit to play before the game, Coach Justin Wilcox told reporters in the post-match press conference.

The Golden Bears and Aztecs played a sloppy game. The game started slowly, with the first points coming with 5:44 minutes left in the first half after Aztecs kicker Nick Lopez scored a 29-yard touchdown.

The two teams collected a combined 27 penalties. San Diego State collected 15 penalties for 120 yards, while California collected 113 penalties, including two unsportsmanlike conduct flags, which Coach Wilcox asks students to stop throwing objects onto the field.
