Suspect accused of multiple armed robberies and alleged murder dies after being tracked down by Tucson police | Arizona News

TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) – The suspect accused of robbing several Tucson stores and shooting his accomplice during one of the robberies has died after being located by Tucson police.

Alejandro Ray Gamez, 26, was tracked down by Tucson police Saturday morning after following his car to an apartment complex at 3985 N. Stone Ave.

Gamez was identified when he got out of the car and began shooting at a TPD sergeant who was in his patrol car on the north side of the complex.

Shortly after firing gunfire at the patrol vehicle, Gamez ran through a yard on the property, hid near a stairwell and reportedly turned the gun on himself, according to TPD.

The Tucson Fire Department responded and pronounced Gamez dead at the scene. Tucson Police say no officers or other community members were injured in the shooting.

Before locating Gamez, the TPD had investigated several armed robberies and a murder in which they believed he was involved.

Earlier this week, on September 10, 35-year-old Angel Reyes Martinez was found with gunshot wounds in a south Tucson park. Despite life-saving efforts, Martinez was pronounced dead at the scene.

Through investigation, it was determined that Martinez and Gamez had worked together to rob a tobacco store in the 1700 block of E. Speedway Blvd. at gunpoint.

During the robbery, the suspects allegedly physically assaulted the store employee and shot him. The employee was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigators believe Gamez shot Martinez hours later in the park where he was found.

Gamez has also been linked to two other armed robberies, one near Three Points and the other near Cortaro Farms.

TPD Homicide and SIU investigators are compiling reports and reviewing evidence to complete their investigation.

Investigators are also asking anyone with information about Alejandro Gamez to call 88-CRIME. They can remain anonymous.
