Horner points the finger at blame for the “massive” accident involving Perez and Sainz

Red Bull team boss Christian Horner has blamed Carlos Sainz for the accident with Sergio Perez on the penultimate lap of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

Perez and Sainz were involved in a podium battle for second place with Charles Leclerc before the “massive” accident occurred on the back straight between the second and third corners.

The moment that led to the incident began at the first corner when Perez tried to overtake Leclerc and take second place.

Leclerc stayed on the inside of the Red Bull driver, which resulted in a poor corner exit for Perez.

This gave Sainz the opportunity to move up to third place before the second corner, from which he again had a poor exit.

Perez took Turn 2 at high speed and passed Sainz before the two collided at high speed, with both drivers making heavy contact with the wall.

The accident cost Perez his first podium finish since the Chinese Grand Prix, although Horner was convinced his driver was not at fault.

“To me, watching the replay, it looked like Carlos was drifting left across the track,” said Horner Viaplay.

“It was a huge accident that caused us a lot of damage. It cost us points, crucial points for Checo and the constructors. Very disappointing.”
