Man armed with sword arrested after days-long standoff in Santa Ynez

Update (8:44 p.m.) – A man was taken into custody Saturday night after a day-long standoff with authorities, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office announced.

Authorities said 21-year-old Frederick Miles Rice turned himself in and was taken into custody at around 6:57 p.m. Saturday.

Sheriff's officials said Rice barricaded himself in a room at a winery event center in the 100 block of North Refugio Avenue and was armed with a sword. Officials said he was destroying property.

Authorities did not say which winery was involved. The Santa Barbara Independent had previously reported it was Sunstone Winery. KSBY was unable to independently verify this information and several calls to the sheriff's office went unanswered Saturday evening.

Sunstone Winery is the only winery in the 100 block of North Refugio Road.

This followed a 24-hour standoff that began around 6:15 p.m. on Friday when Rice entered the winery's premises without authorization.

Rice was booked into the Santa Barbara County Northern Branch Jail on charges of vandalism and burglary. Bail is set at $50,000.
