MARION COUNTY, Indiana — They met to exchange weapons and it ended in a fatal shootout. Now one of those involved has been convicted.

Tremayne Hobson Jr. was convicted last week of murder and robbery with aggravated assault for his role in the fatal shooting of Dusty Lawrence in 2021, the Marion County District Attorney's Office said.

Lawrence had been messaging Demetrius Coakley through Discord, a messaging and social media app, until the afternoon of March 28, 2021. The men arranged to meet for a gun exchange on Newcastle Drive. The location was near Tremayne Hobson's home, police later learned.

Lawrence, his wife and five-year-old daughter arrived. Lawrence got out of the car with his gun case and was shot minutes later. He later died of his injuries.

Investigators have since learned that Hobson and Coakley planned to rob Lawrence of his gun, but the situation got out of hand and Lawrence was shot.

One piece of evidence that police were able to link to Hobson was clothing found in his home following a search warrant. The clothing matched the suspect's appearance that day.

“The complete lack of regulation of the sale and trade of weapons in our state puts people in unnecessary danger,” Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears said in a press release Saturday. “What should have been a straightforward transaction ended in absolute tragedy.”

Demetrius Coakley will also face charges. Next up is sentencing for Tremayne Hobson Jr.
