The police identified the missing person as R Sureshan employee of Bhel Trichy complex near Thiruverumbur. Suresh along with his two daughters, identified as S Krithika, 13, and S Yashika, 6, went for a leisurely dip in the Kallanai canal near Kiliyur village, in the suburbs of Trichy city.
While Krithika was sitting on the bank of the canal, Yashika ventured into the water. As the water was receding rapidly, Yashika was swept away by the river's currents. Subsequently, Suresh, who jumped into the water to save his daughter, was also swept away. When the locals heard the alarms raised by Krithika, they rushed to the spot and managed to rescue Yashika.
The girl was rushed to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead. Thiruverumbur police shifted the girl's body to Thuvakudi Government Hospital for autopsy.
Police added that search operations would continue on Monday to find Suresh, who is suspected to have drowned.
