Accident on I-77 and heavy police presence in Charlotte lead to significant delays

WCNC Charlotte's on-scene team saw several police cars blocking traffic near Remount Road.

CHARLOTTE, NC — A mile-long backup occurred on Interstate 77 near Remount Road Sunday morning after a chase involving Mooresville police ensued in the southbound lanes, according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation and Mooresville Police.

WCNC Charlotte's team was on scene around 11:30 a.m. and saw several police cars blocking traffic near Mile 8. One patrol car appeared to have been involved in a collision with at least one civilian vehicle.

The paramedic said he did not respond to an accident at that location.

Mooresville police confirmed that officers pursued and stopped a suspected stolen car in the same area on I-77.

At approximately 10:20 a.m., Mooresville officers received a report via an automatic license plate reader (ALPR) of a stolen car traveling on Highway 150. They found the car near Bluefield Road and attempted to make a traffic stop, but the suspect vehicle fled.

The chase ended near Remount Road on I-77 in Charlotte.

A suspect fled on foot from a stopped vehicle and was quickly arrested near Exit 9, Mooresville police said. Police also arrested a second suspect in connection with the chase.

Charges and further information will be released, police said.
