10-year-old girl from New York dies after falling from window: “She was a treasure”

According to sources, a 10-year-old girl fell from a building window in New York City and died after apparently being left home alone.

Police were called to 2157 Southern Boulevard in the East Tremont neighborhood of the Bronx around 8:45 p.m. on Thursday because a girl had fallen from a building window.

The young girl may have been home alone when she fell. Police said she suffered injuries consistent with a fall from a height, including bruises on her feet, police sources told The Post on Sunday.

She was vomiting blood as she was taken in a private vehicle to St. Barnabas Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, according to law enforcement sources.

Sources also told CBS News that the girl and her mother had argued earlier in the day about the use of an iPad.

At around 4:30 p.m. the mother set off for a doctor's appointment.

When she returned home, she found the girl lying in the yard in front of her building, the sources added.

Police are currently reviewing surveillance video to determine if the child was supervised and whether he or she fell from a window or roof.

On Sunday, a memorial with pink flowers, purple balloons and candles was set up in front of the building where the little girl died.

A resident of the building who has lived in the building for more than 30 years said she called 911 without knowing she was calling for her neighbor's daughter.

“My son called me and told me to call 911,” she told The Post on Sunday. “I called 911 and they kept asking me questions. I thought something had happened to someone who got off the bus with him. [her son]. I didn't know it was my neighbor's daughter up there.”

When she arrived downstairs, the family had already gotten into a taxi to take the girl to the hospital, she added.

“Her mother was very, very nice. A decent mother. She lives above me. The children were kept very nice and clean,” she said. “I feel sorry for the mother. I feel for her.”

The neighbor added that the family was very reserved and the little girl was shy.

“The child was very quiet. I always teased her like, 'Oh, you look like you do,'” she remembers. “She was a sweetheart.”

The city's coroner will determine the child's cause of death, police said.

No charges were filed and no one was arrested in this case.
