Chiefs grab Haason Reddick in mysterious blockbuster trade

While the Kansas City Chiefs are off to a great start with an impressive Week 1 win over the Ravens, fans are still looking for ways to improve the team. When news broke earlier this week that star defensive lineman Hasson Reddick was on the transfer list, Chiefs fans began dreaming of bringing the elite pass rusher to Kansas City.

It's understandable that Reddick is expected to strengthen the defensive line. George Karlaftis and Mike Danna are a solid defensive end duo, but the depth behind them can still be improved with Charles Omenihu still out. Another All-Pro pass rusher could catapult the Chiefs into a league of their own and make them the best defensive line in the league.

The most important thing in a deal like this, however, is the price. ESPN was completely wrong on this point in its latest article about bogus deals for Reddick.

In the three-team trade scenario they put together, the Chiefs get Reddick and a 2025 sixth-round pick, but give up George Karlaftis and a fifth-round pick.

“Kansas City is trying to win its third straight and could move up with a pick swap and some extra money from Karlaftis – who had 10.5 sacks a year ago but never came close to an average pass rush win rate – to Reddick, a real troublemaker.”

ESPN

That's a confusing package for Reddick. First, it's not even clear that Reddick is an upgrade over Karlaftis. The 23-year-old defensive lineman is coming off a season in which he recorded 10.5 sacks in 16 games and added three more in the postseason. He's been a big contributor and has been one of the Chiefs' most reliable defensive playmakers in two Super Bowl seasons. It doesn't make much sense to give up your recent first-round pick, who is still improving, for a 30-year-old defensive lineman who is immediately seeking a huge contract extension.

Even if we assume Reddick is a clear improvement over Karlaftis, he is seven years older. He has been excellent for the Eagles the past two seasons, but how many elite seasons does he really have left?

Karlaftis, on the other hand, has untapped potential. He will require a large contract extension, but the Chiefs still have another year to think about it. They view Furious George as one of the cornerstones of their defense's future and it's hard to imagine them parting ways with him.

If the Chiefs want to sign Reddick, they will have to put another trade package on the market since the one proposed by ESPN is not happening.
