Man from Lee's Summit allegedly stole gift cards worth $180,000

In Lee's Summit, a man was arrested and charged for allegedly stealing over $180,000 in gift cards. According to court documents, Daowang Lin was arrested on September 12, 2024, in the 300 block of SW Ward in Lee's Summit after anti-theft employees observed him in a scheme to steal gift cards. Lin is part of a group that tampers with gift card packaging to replace stolen cards with altered ones, which are then returned to store shelves. When customers purchase these altered cards, they are activated at checkout and can be quickly redeemed by the thieves. Lin tampered with $4,750 in gift cards and possessed an iPhone with gift card data. A search of his car found approximately 700 more gift cards valued at $188,200. Surveillance footage also showed two other unidentified individuals involved. Due to the significant value of the stolen goods, Lin faces charges of grand larceny under Missouri law.
