2024 Emmys red carpet: Watch live as stars arrive

The 76th Primetime Emmy Awards will be held Sunday night at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, hosted by Dan and Eugene Levy and airing on ABC.

Here’s what to know:

  • Who’s on the red carpet: Quinta Brunson and Selena Gomez dazzled in black, Alan Cumming worked a plaid-on-plaid look in homage to his roots, and Gillian Anderson wore solid reflective silver.
  • How to watch: The show will air live at 8 p.m. ET. on ABC and can be streamed through live TV streaming services that include ABC in their lineup, like Hulu+ Live TV, YouTube TV and FuboTV.
  • What’s nominated: “Shogun” could be in for an epic night, “The Bear” could clean up for the second time in less than a year, and “Baby Reindeer” has gone from dark horse to contender. See the full list of nominees.

The view from inside: Reba McEntire

Reba McEntire can’t move more than a few feet without getting stopped for handshakes and selfies by the throng of people killing time outside the theater. At the start of the red carpet, McEntire and boyfriend Rex Linn parted ways. He headed into the theater anonymously.

What’s the difference between the Creative Arts Emmys and tonight?

It’s the same award, but the statuettes are technically distributed over three nights: the two-night Creative Arts Emmys, which took place last weekend, and the Primetime Emmy Awards, which take place tonight.

The nominations for both are announced at the same time, but the Creative Arts Emmys honor the behind-the-scenes artistic and technical achievement in television.

The “Abbott Elementary” nominee stunned in a liquid black strapless gown from Georges Chakra Couture. It had huge black bows down one side and a fishtail skirt.

Other celebs also went with black, including a classic Hollywood look for Selena Gomez. Her halter-style goddess gown had silver trim. Others went for a lasting trend: red, but metallics shined on. Gillian Anderson wore solid reflective silver.

Who was snubbed? And which nominees were a surprise?

Want to regale your Emmys watch party with in-the-know context about who should be up for an award? What about the lovely surprises among nominees?

The Associated Press details the snubs and other talking points from this year’s crop of nominees.

Movie stars could wind up with Emmys, too

While “Shogun” and “The Bear” may lack household names, there are truly major stars who are potential winners at these Emmys — several of them Oscar winners.

Two-time Academy Award winner Jodie Foster is a good bet to win her first Emmy as best actress in a limited or anthology series or TV movie for playing a hot-tempered cold-weather cop in “True Detective: Night Country.”

Meryl Streep could end up with more Emmys than Oscars if she wins her fourth for best supporting actress in a comedy for “Only Murders in the Building.”

Reigning best supporting actor Oscar winner Robert Downey Jr. could also become a first-time Emmy winner. He’s up for best supporting actor in the limited series category for playing five different roles in “The Sympathizer.”

Scottish actor Alan Cumming does ‘The Traitors’ proud

Alan Cumming worked a kilt and plaid-on-plaid look in homage to his roots. On his white jacket was a medal in the design of the trans flag.

Cumming is queer icon and fierce fashionista. He won an Emmy for hosting the hit reality show “The Traitors” at the Creative Arts presentation. The show is in the running for a reality competition Emmy. Cumming’s look was designed by Teddy Vonranson.

Wait, ‘The Idol’ won an Emmy?

The HBO show starring The Weeknd and Lily-Rose Depp debuted last summer to controversy and was often reviled by critics. But while “The Idol” was canceled after one season, it generated a host of memes — and picked up an Emmy at last weekend’s Creative Arts ceremony.

Its sole Emmy nomination was in the choreography for scripted programming category. The show won for “Routines: Rehearsal / Music Video Shoot / Dollhouse,” choreographed by Nina McNeely.

Here’s to everyone who still has “World Class Sinner/I’m a Freak” stuck in their heads.

Lamorne Morris hopes ‘Fargo’ opens up doors for a variety of new roles

Lamorne Morris arrived at the carpet for his first Emmy nomination. Morris is nominated for outstanding supporting actor for his role as a police officer in “Fargo.” Morris said one outrageous reaction he received to his nomination news was from his four-year-old daughter.

“She made fun of me as I was crying and it made sense because she is my kid,” he said. “It’s only fitting that she roasts me.”

Morris caught the clip on video and shared the adorable moment to Instagram in August.

“Daddy, are you crying again?” his daughter points and laughs in the clip.

The actor known for playing Winston Bishop in the TV show “New Girl” said he hopes his role in “Fargo” opens him up to a variety of new acting roles.

“When you do a lot of broad comedies people just associate you with that,” he said. “Hopefully now after this, the world opens up a little bit more cause as actors we can do a lot of things.”

The two from “Reservation Dogs” joined others from the hit comedy on the carpet. Sterlin Harjo wore a hat with a white feather and a silver neck piece over his open-collar shirt. Dallas Goldtooth was in a navy suit with silver strands at the neck and on one lapel with some killer multicolored shoes on his feet. The FX show is up for a comedy series Emmy. Harjo is an executive producer.

WATCH: Are you betting on ‘Slow Horses’?

The TV series “Slow Horses” – which stars Gary Oldman as intelligence officer Jackson Lamb – goes into Sunday’s Emmy Awards telecast with nine nominations, including one for best drama series. (Sept. 13)

“Slow Horses” is a critical darling. It’s received nine Emmy nominations. And, in its fourth season, many Americans still haven’t heard of the Apple TV+ show.

The Associated Press dove into the phenomenon that might be slow-burning but can’t be reined in, speaking to star Gary Oldman and others behind the show.

“Slow Horses” is about underdogs and there’s something appropriate about the series emerging from the cold to be recognized at the Emmys.

“It’s a nice thing when the reviews come in and people like it and, and it and it gets a nod,” Oldman says. He’s looking forward to catching up with his co-stars on Sunday around a table “and have a laugh.”

IN PHOTOS: Who killed it at the Creative Arts Emmys red carpet?

Angela Bassett and Barbara Corcoran were among the red-carpet standouts at last weekend’s Creative Arts Emmys.

They served up sparkly purple and flirty floral, in that order.

Kristen Wiig lit up the second night in emerald green. Hannah Waddingham brought the bombshell in low-cut liquid black.

How did this year’s Oscar winners do?

Image

Emma Stone, the best actress winner at this year’s Oscars for “Poor Things,” did not get nominated for Showtime’s “The Curse.” Stone was mentioned in a number of predictions as a possible lead actress contender. The Nathan Fielder-Benny Safdie show itself was entirely snubbed.

Her fellow 2024 Oscar winners had better luck.

Da’Vine Joy Randolph, who took home the best supporting actress Oscar for “The Holdovers,” is also now an Emmy nominee. Randolph was nominated in the guest actress category for an appearance on “Only Murders in the Building,” but lost at the Creative Arts ceremony. And Robert Downey Jr., this year’s best supporting actor Oscar winner, is nominated for “The Sympathizer.”

Cillian Murphy, for the record, was not eligible for an Emmy this year.

Nominees to watch for on the red carpet

As the red carpet kicks off, predicting standouts ahead of a carpet filled with brand ambassadors and celebs with hooked-up stylists is a fool’s errand, but here it is:

Among nominees, look out for Lily Gladstone and her commitment to Indigenous designers.

Watch for the quiet luxury vibe of Donald Glover. And keep eyes on Quinta Brunson and Ayo Edebiri.

The same goes for Bowen Yang, Greta Lee, Sheryl Lee Ralph and Dakota Fanning.

Morphine Love Dion, Sapphira Cristál and more joined them. They nailed the group photo. The show is a nominee in the reality competition program category.

2 Queen Elizabeth IIs are nominated

Claire Foy, whose portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in “The Crown’’ earned her a lead actress Emmy Award in 2018 and a guest actress Emmy in 2021, is now nominated again for a guest spot. Foy appeared in the final episode of the series as Imelda Staunton’s Queen Elizabeth II pondered abdicating the throne. Staunton is nominated for best actress.

Olivia Colman, who portrayed the queen in the third and fourth seasons, also made an appearance in the same episode but was not nominated. This isn’t due to a snub, however, but a technicality where Colman didn’t meet the nomination qualifications. She wasn’t on camera long enough.

Did you know there was a Sports Emmys?

It’s not just the ESPYs! The Sports Emmys exist, too.

At May’s ceremony in New York, former NFL tight end Greg Olsen picked up the top event analyst trophy. Olsen is at Fox Sports, where he held the top analyst spot before Tom Brady moved into the booth this season.

IN PHOTOS: Fashion standouts at the January Emmys

The strike-delayed 75th Emmys in January produced a sea of red-carpet standouts.

Fashion “it” girl Ayo Edebiri showed up in a black leather molded tulip look. Chartreuse was the choice for Rhea Seehorn and Jessica Chastain. Red was the new Barbie pink for Sarah Snook. Issa Rae went for loose-feathered champagne.

Among the men: Steven Krueger turned up in a perfectly tailored white tuxedo jacket with black trim. Most of the other men went for classic black tuxes.

Selena Gomez is finally up for an Emmy

Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building” is a three-hander comedic mystery starring Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez. Until now, Emmy voters have acknowledged only Martin and Short in the best actor category.

That with Gomez receiving a best actress nomination. She will compete against Quinta Brunson, Ayo Edebiri, Maya Rudolph, Jean Smart and Kristin Wiig.

‘The Morning Show’ wakes up Emmy voters

“The Morning Show” on Apple TV+ has always included current events in storylines, but the series about behind-the-scenes drama at a TV network took it up a notch with its third season, earning it its first Emmy nomination for outstanding drama.

The show’s 10 episodes tackled topics including the hacking of a corporation, a media merger and fallout from the Jan. 6 insurrection.

Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon are both up for lead actress. Jon Hamm joins 2020 winner Billy Crudup and previous nominee Mark Duplass in the supporting actor category. “The Morning Show” also dominates the supporting actress field, with nominations for Nicole Beharie, Greta Lee, Karen Pittman and Holland Taylor.

‘The Bear’ plays second banana to ‘Shogun’

Image

“The Bear,” which led all comedies with 23 nominations, could well have been the darling of these Emmys after tying “Succession” with six wins at the previous ceremony.

Its placement in the comedy category — mocked by some for a show with more drama than many dramas — will be a major perk, though, amid the “Shogun” dominance.

The FX show’s second season — which this year’s nominations are for — was even more acclaimed than its first (though its recently released third season was received more coolly). It could easily see repeat acting wins for Jeremy Allen White, Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Ayo Edebiri, who will face somewhat stiffer competition after a shift from supporting actress to lead.

‘Shogun’ steamrolls into Sunday

Image

On the heels of last weekend’s Creative Arts Emmys, “Shogun” could win six more trophies, including best drama series, best actor in a drama for Hiroyuki Sanada and best actress in a drama for Anna Sawai.

Though if it fails to win in the biggest categories, the debut show may end up feeling like a sports team that has a record-setting regular season then tanks in the playoffs.

Either Sanada or Sawai would be the first Japanese actor to win an Emmy.

When “Shogun” led all Emmy nominees with 25 at the announcements in July, many — including The Associated Press — suggested it was at least in part because of the absence of last year’s HBO big three: “Succession,” “The White Lotus” and “The Last of Us.” It’s already won 14 trophies.

Relive the highlights from January’s Emmys

So it be, so it is, as Cousin Greg would say: “Succession” had a fittingly successful sendoff at the most recent Emmys. But it was not the only show to make a ludicrously capacious haul. “The Bear” had a bearish night indeed, fully dominating the comedy category in its first season.

And the chaotic, darkly humorous “Beef” was the other big victor, winning best limited series, with leads Steven Yeun and Ali Wong becoming the first Asian Americans to win in their categories. Also making history: star Quinta Brunson of “Abbott Elementary,” the first Black winner in her category since 1981.

See more top moments, from the host’s mother to special cast reunions.

Didn’t we already have an Emmys this year?

Image

Your memory is sharp. The 75th Emmys were indeed just back in January.

But they were an outlier, delayed from their usual late-summer (yes, it’s still technically not fall) perch by the Hollywood strikes.

The Emmys already tend to air long after the TV it honors has aired. So the delay led to slightly confusing situations, like “The Bear” winning trophies for its first season half a year after its second season had released. (And the second season is what’s up for awards tonight, not the recently wrapped third).

The Emmys have become the “Shogun” show well before Sunday’s ceremony even begins.

The FX series about political machinations among local lords, Portuguese traders and a wandering British sailor is already the winningest series for a single season in Emmy history after taking 14 trophies at the precursor Creative Arts ceremony on Sunday.

The main Emmys show could not only extend its lead — it could bring historic wins for its lead actors.
