Van Buren County man arrested for attempted murder of his wife, officials say

A Gobles man was arrested after allegedly attempting to kill his wife early Sunday morning, according to the Van Buren County Sheriff's Office.

Just before 1 a.m., officers were called to a residence on 24th Avenue near 36th Street after receiving a domestic violence call, the sheriff's office said.

Before they arrived at the scene, the 49-year-old man had attempted to stab his wife with two kitchen knives and slammed her against a wall in the house, officials said.

According to the sheriff's office, she was able to escape the house before the man knocked her to the ground outside, pressed his knees to her chest and choked her “to the point of unconsciousness.”

The sheriff's office said the woman eventually managed to escape and hide in a shed before officers arrived at the scene.

The man did not cooperate with officers when they arrived. He was then tasered and taken to the Van Buren County Jail on a charge of assault with intent to murder, authorities said.

The woman was taken to hospital for treatment. Officials did not provide any information about the extent of her injuries.

Authorities believe alcohol played a role.

This incident remains under investigation by the Van Buren County Sheriff's Office.
