Man arrested for ‘attempted murder’ of Trump

Local, state and federal police in Palm Beach County held a press conference Sunday afternoon, just hours after former President Donald Trump was nearly shot at while playing a hole at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach.

Former President Donald Trump's The campaign said in a statement that Trump left the club when gunshots were heard nearby. CNN later reported that a man with an AK-47 rifle was believed to have been fired from a tree line and that Trump's Secret Service returned fire. Fox News spoke to sources who then said Trump's Secret Service did indeed open fire on the would-be shooter before he could fire a shot.

Sheriff of Palm Beach County Ric Bradshaw briefed the media on the rapidly evolving situation, noting that multiple law enforcement agencies were working to arrest a suspected shooter and protect Trump.

Bradshaw said passersby saw a man running from the scene after the shooting. The man fled in a vehicle but was quickly arrested in nearby Martin County.

The sheriff said the man hid in a bush on the edge of Trump's golf course and left behind two backpacks, a GoPro camera and an AK-47 rifle with a mounted scope. He said the Secret Service did its job brilliantly.

A Secret Service representative thanked local police for their help in arresting the suspected shooter and confirmed that Secret Service agents did indeed open fire before the man could shoot Trump.

Police said they were treating their investigation as an “attempted murder” and urged residents in the area to avoid the golf course. They also asked anyone with information about the incident to call the FBI.

Sunday's incident came two months after Trump was grazed in the ear by an assassin's bullet at a rally in Pennsylvania. A Secret Service sniper killed Thomas Matthew Crooks20, on July 13th.

Trump supporters Corey Comparatore – Translation50, was killed in the shooting.

In a statement, Vice President Kamala Harris said: “I have been informed of reports that shots were fired near former President Trump and his Florida estate, and I am glad he is safe. Violence has no place in America.”
