Laurie Shaver of Florida convicted of murdering her husband after blaming her 7-year-old daughter

A Florida mother who accused her seven-year-old daughter of shooting her husband, a Disney mechanic, in the back of the head before burying his body under a concrete slab has been convicted.

After five hours of deliberation, a jury found 41-year-old Laurie Shaver guilty of first-degree murder with a firearm of her husband Michael Shaver, 36, WFTV reported.

Prosecutors say Laurie shot her husband in the back of the head in their Claremont home west of Orlando in November 2015 and pretended he was alive for three years.

Michael's body was not found until 2018, when police were called to conduct a wellness check on the Walt Disney World employee – whose remains were eventually discovered buried under a concrete slab in the family's backyard.

After her husband's murder, Laurie posed as him on Facebook and told his boss that he was quitting and moving to Georgia, and told others to “leave her alone,” Law&Crime reported.

Officials said Laurie also assumed Michael's identity via text message after his death, WESH reported.

Laurie protested her innocence and even accused her seven-year-old daughter of shooting Michael while he was beating her and threatening to kill her.

The daughter, who called her mother her “best friend,” repeated Laurie’s story on the witness stand.

“And I grabbed her and took her gun. And I went back out and went to the door. The door was already open. And he still had my mother on the ground. Still laying on the ground. Still kicking her. And I shot him,” the daughter claimed, according to WESH.

Laurie later claimed that her ex-boyfriend Jeremy Townsend quickly walked over to Michael and shot him a second time to make sure he was dead.

Laurie also accused Townsend of disposing of Michael's body while she was taking her children to school.

Laurie, Townsend and their daughter testified on the witness stand Thursday. Townsend said he had never met Michael and was not present when he died.

“I didn't know who Mike was,” Townsend said, rejecting the defense's claim that he lied about his dealings with the family.

Laurie testified that Michael grabbed her and held her down because he was angry that she was in another relationship. She said he hit her and put her head and neck under his foot.

When her daughter, who had just turned 16, took the stand, she described the daily arguments between her parents, which often resulted in violence, and said that Laurie had always been the mother and that Michael had no special relationship with his two children.

During cross-examination of the daughter, jurors seemed to avoid looking at her as she struggled to explain some details of her memory of the events, such as why she dated the shooting to May rather than November.

Laurie also struggled to recount her husband's whereabouts during the six-month gap in her story.

Their lawyer said they plan to appeal the verdict.

Laurie is scheduled to be sentenced on November 25. She faces life in prison, WFTV reported.
