Man accused of opening fire in Minneapolis apartment building faces charges – InForum

MINNEAPOLIS – A man who allegedly opened fire in a Minneapolis apartment building early Saturday, Sept. 7, faces assault charges.

The Hennepin County Attorney's Office charged 40-year-old Nathan Mellstrom Matz with three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon.

Police evacuated residents of the apartment near 40th Street and Minnehaha Avenue after several people reported a man firing an AK-47 rifle inside and outside the building.

Minneapolis police Sergeant Ben Bauer shot, wounded and disarmed Matz. Matz is hospitalized and is expected to survive.

No one else was injured, but several residents had near misses.

An apartment door on Minnehaha Avenue is covered with a sheet of plywood on September 8. Minneapolis police are investigating a shooting that occurred at this scene on September 7.

Prosecutors said one person woke up to gunshots and found bullet holes in the floor around him. Another person came out of his apartment and saw Matz with a gun in his hand. Investigators reportedly found a bullet hole near where the resident had been standing.

A house across the street was also hit by bullets.

According to an eviction petition filed Monday by the building's property management, Matz has lived in the building since 2014.
