Crime and incident data as of mid-2024

Naperville Police Report

The Naperville Police Department recognizes that awareness is a key factor in the overall safety of a community. Residents who are aware of the types of crimes occurring in their city are more likely to exercise situational awareness, report suspicious activity to police, and take proactive steps to avoid becoming victims. For this reason, the Naperville Police Department presents the following overview of crime and incident data reported between January 1 and June 30, 2024.

Crimes against persons

Crimes against persons accounted for about a quarter of all crimes reported in Naperville in the first half of 2024. The vast majority (about 92%) of reported crimes against persons fell into the categories of intimidation and simple assault. Simple assault includes altercations and incidents (including domestic disputes) that do not involve weapons or serious injury.

Here are some insights from the 2024 half-year statistics:

  • The total number of crimes against persons is similar to last year, with slight increases in some categories, including sexual abuse and simple assault.
  • In the first half of 2024, 20 cases of sexual assault were reported to the police. While this does not diminish the seriousness of this crime, we believe it is important for the public to know that in most (18) of these cases, the victims knew the perpetrator or were somehow acquainted with him.
  • About 66% of all simple physical injuries reported to the NPD are domestic violence.

If you are a victim of domestic violence, know that help is available. Call NPD Victim Advocate Gianna Trombino at (630) 305-5488 or visit www.naperville.il.us/DomesticViolence.

Crimes against property

The majority (about 63%) of crimes reported in Naperville in the first half of 2024 are classified as property crimes, most of which are theft, fraud (including identity theft), and vandalism. Here are some insights from the 2024 mid-year statistics:

  • In the first half of 2024, fewer property crimes were reported compared to the same period in 2023.
  • Financial crime accounts for about 20% of all reported property crimes.
  • 75% of vehicle break-ins reported in the first half of 2024 involved unlocked vehicles
  • More than 50% of burglaries in residential and commercial buildings occurred in unlocked buildings.
  • In the first half of 2024, 55 attempted or completed vehicle thefts were reported, significantly more than the 24 reported in the same period last year. Many of these are believed to be related to a series of Hyundai and Kia thefts that resulted from certain theft methods popularized on social media. Both Hyundai and Kia have offered upgrades to anti-theft software and other programs to counteract this trend.

As we enter the second half of 2024, we ask that residents continue to develop awareness of the situation and report any suspicious activity or concerning behavior to our department. As the saying goes, “If you see something, say something.”

In addition, we ask that residents continue to follow the recommendations of our “Lock It or Lose It” campaign – keep valuables out of sight and lock homes and vehicles. This community partnership, along with NPD's proactive efforts, will ensure Naperville remains one of the safest cities of its size in America.
