Meryl Streep and Martin Short reignite romance rumors at the 2024 Emmys

Martin Short and Meryl Streep sat next to each other at the 2024 Emmys at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday – amid persistent rumors of a romance.

During the coveted awards ceremony, the two laughed a lot together.

But Short and Streep's appearance came as no surprise, as a September 13 post on X said there was “confirmation from talent show seating charts” that the two will “sit next to each other” at the ceremony.

The biggest night on television follows the duo holding hands at the season four premiere of “Only Murders in the Building” in Los Angeles last month.

But after rumors of a relationship first emerged between Short and Streep after they met at the 2024 Golden Globes in January, the former “Father of the Bride” star's spokesperson denied the rumors.

Short's spokesman told E News at the time: “They are just very good friends. That's all.”

The comedian himself insisted in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in August that he and the “Mamma Mia!” actress were just “friends.”

Fans continue to feel like life imitates art as a romance blossoms between Short and Streep's characters in the third season of the hit Hulu series.

“It's pretty unexpected to imagine a pairing of Meryl Streep and Martin Short and see them find this incredible connection with each other,” John Hoffman, the series' creator, told TheWrap in August 2023. “And, as Meryl said, it shouldn't be cheesy or have anything to do with age or anything like that.”

“You see Marty progress in an incredible way, and nobody works harder at it, goes at it with more intelligence,” he continued. “Then to see him have these scenes that break your heart and have to be played with such dramatic intensity, on the line between comedy and mystery… I'm amazed.”

Short is a widower and was married to Canadian actress Nancy Dolman from 1980 until her death from cancer in 2010, with whom he has three children: Katherine (40), Oliver (37) and Henry (34).

Sources told Page Six in October that Streep and Don Gummer – whom she married in 1978 and with whom she has four children: singer-songwriter Henry Wolfe, 44, and actresses Mamie Gummer, 40, Grace Gummer, 37, and Louisa Jacobson, 32 – have been quietly “separated for more than six years.”

“Only Murders in the Building” earned 21 nominations at the Emmys, including best comedy series. Shorts co-star Selena Gomez was also nominated for her first acting Emmy for a primetime series, for best lead actress in a comedy series, but lost to “Hacks” star Jean Smart.

The third actor in the show's trio, Steve Martin, was also nominated for Best Actor in a Comedy Series. The award ultimately went to Jeremy Allen White, the lead actor in “The Bear”.
