Political pins and symbolic style statements

While several A-listers and stars made bold fashion statements on the red carpet, some guests at the 2024 Emmy Awards opted for subtle symbolic messages in their wardrobe, makeup and accessories. Pins and makeup with symbolic meaning were the themes on the red carpet at the awards ceremony in Los Angeles on Sunday.

See below how Nichola Coughlan, Alan Cumming and other stars sent symbolic messages about current political, humanitarian and social issues with their fashion statements.

On the lapel of his jacket, Emmy winner for “Baby Reindeer,” Richard Gadd, wore a white pin with black lettering that read “We Are Survivors,” a reference to a charity in the UK that cares for male victims of abuse.

“I will always thank them,” Gadd told The Guardian last April, adding: “Because they have helped me tremendously over the years and they say breaking the silence is the first step. Sometimes I speak to male survivors and I'm not a counsellor or a professional but the first piece of advice is break the silence. Talk to somebody and if that's too scary, just write it down and process it into something. Because I think the more you let out, the smaller it gets.”

Nicola Coughlan

“Bridgerton” star Nicola Coughlan wore her Artists4Ceasefire pin on the Emmys red carpet. The pin is a symbol that advocates for a ceasefire in Gaza.

“It's very important to me because I feel like a very privileged person,” Coughlan told USA Today last May. “I'm doing my dream job and I get to travel the world, but at the same time I'm very aware of what's happening in Rafah right now.”

Emmy-nominated actor D'Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai of “Reservation Dogs” had a red handprint over his mouth on the Emmy Awards red carpet. The handprint is a symbol of solidarity with missing and murdered indigenous women, according to the official website of the nonprofit organization Native Hope.

The symbol “represents all the missing sisters whose voices are not being heard. It represents the silence of the media and law enforcement in the midst of this crisis. It represents the oppression and subjugation of the indigenous women who are now standing up and saying: #NoMoreStolenSisters.”
