Why Matthew Perry wasn't in the 2024 Emmys In Memoriam segment

Every year, the Emmy Awards honor deceased actors and people behind the camera in an emotional “In Memoriam” segment.

At this year's awards ceremony, stars such as Bob Newhart, Richard Simmons, Shannen Doherty, Carl Weathers, Richard Lewis, Donald Sutherland and James Earl Jones were honored for their extraordinary careers.

However, some people on social media wondered why “Friends” star Matthew Perry was not there.

The answer is simple. The actor was actually honored at the 75th annual ceremony, which took place in January of this year.

Perry, who died on October 28, 2023, was part of the tribute at the 2023 ceremony, which was postponed to 2024 due to the strikes in Hollywood.

The ceremony ended with pictures of a whole host of talents, with Perry in the center.

This year, Jelly Roll sang his song “I Am Not Okay” in this segment.

“I believe that music is therapeutic. I believe that music can heal. I also believe that storytelling is just as cathartic,” the singer said. “I hope that this can be a healing moment for those who are grieving the storytellers we've lost this year. If you're feeling lost or alone tonight, I want you to know that it's OK to not always be OK.”
