Trump assassination attempt: 10 important details about the incident at the Florida golf club | World news

Assassination attempt on Trump: This was the second apparent assassination attempt on former US President Donald Trump within two months, the first at the election rally in Pennsylvania and the second on Sunday afternoon at the Florida Golf Club. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump was on a golf course when US intelligence noticed an unusual presence nearby. The FBI described the incident as an “assassination attempt”.

  • Law enforcement has arrested a 58-year-old suspect named Ryan Wesley Routh. He was reportedly seen behind the bushes, just 350 to 450 yards from Trump. When the Secret Service officer fired in his direction, he dropped the weapon – a high-powered AK-47-style rifle – and fled the scene.

  • Routh got into a black SUV and drove away. He was later arrested in a neighboring county. According to police, the suspect had two black backpacks hanging on the fence and a GoPro camera.

  • Martin County Sheriff William Snyder reported that the man remained remarkably “calm” after his arrest, showing little emotion. “He never asked, 'What's going on?' Despite the presence of police officers with rifles, flashing lights and considerable activity, he did not question the situation,” Snyder said.

  • In 2002, Routh was found guilty of possession of a weapon of mass destruction, according to online records from the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction. The records do not detail the case, but a 2002 News & Record article mentions a man with the same name who was arrested after a three-hour standoff with police.

  • Donald Trump was undeterred by the two near misses in a row and said: “Shots were fired near me, but before the rumor mill gets out of control, I want you to hear this first: I AM SAFE AND I AM FINE.”

  • “Nothing will slow me down. I will NEVER GIVE UP,” he informed his followers via email before returning to his residence at Mar-a-Lago, his private club in Palm Beach.

  • Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were briefed on the incident. The White House said it was “relieved” to learn that Trump was safe. Harris, who is running against Trump in the presidential election, commented in a statement that “violence has no place in America.”

  • The suspect was arrested following a “beware” warning from the FBI, Secret Service and Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office. Sheriff William Snyder reported that his officers “immediately flooded” northbound I-95, securing every exit from the Palm Beach County line in the south to the St. Lucie County line in the north. “One of my patrol cars saw the vehicle, found the license plate and we pulled up on the vehicle,” Snyder said. “We pulled up on the car, brought it to a safe stop and arrested the driver.”

  • On July 13, Donald Trump was shot during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, with a bullet grazing his ear. Eight days later, President Joe Biden withdrew from the race, paving the way for Vice President Kamala Harris to become the Democratic nominee.

  • Since the assassination attempt in July, security for Donald Trump has been significantly tightened. When he is in Trump Tower in New York, dump trucks are strategically parked to form a barrier in front of the building. At outdoor rallies, he now speaks to the crowd from behind bulletproof glass.
