Halifax man arrested for drunk driving after equipment violation; second DWI in less than a year | Local News

On September 14th at approximately 3 a.m., Lt. DA Newsome of the Roanoke Rapids Police Department was traveling on NC Highway 125 when he noticed a vehicle with a tail light violation.

According to a press release from Roanoke Rapids Police Chief C. Shane Guyant, Lt. Newsome conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle. The driver was identified as James Jevon Arrington, 48, of Halifax. Lt. Newsome noticed signs of impairment and attempted to administer a standardized sobriety test to Arrington, but he refused to cooperate. Arrington was arrested and transported to the police station.

Lt. Newsome read Arrington his implied consent rights and asked him to consent to a breath test using an Intoxilyzer. Arrington refused to provide a breath sample. Lt. Newsome requested and obtained a search warrant to obtain a blood sample from Arrington. The search warrant was executed at a local medical facility.

Arrington was taken before the Justice of the Peace where he was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving without a license and lighting violation. He was given a court date of October 11 and was not granted bail because he has a pending case for driving under the influence of alcohol under the Pretrial Integrity Act, which will be effective December 16, 2023, in Nash County.
