Second earthquake in Elgin and Lugoff area shakes Kershaw County

The earthquake occurred less than 24 hours after another earthquake struck the same area on Saturday.

KERSHAW COUNTY, SC — Following an earthquake on Saturday, another one struck in Kershaw County Sunday afternoon, and dozens of people reported feeling it.

The last earthquake occurred around 6 p.m. and had an estimated magnitude of 2.4. According to initial forecasts by the US Geological Survey, the epicenter of the earthquake was off Green Hill Road west of Whiting Way and I-20. By 6:40 p.m., about 160 people had reported feeling the rumbling.

Earthquakes are not uncommon in the Lugoff and Elgin area, with nine more reported there in 2024, including a magnitude 2.1 earthquake that struck near Doby's Mill Elementary School at around 2:46 p.m. Saturday.

Compared to 2022, when there were about 80 earthquakes in this region alone, 2024 was relatively quiet. The strongest earthquake of 2024 had a magnitude of 2.7 and occurred on March 9.
