Supreme Court joins fight against forest fires

Flávio Dino, who left Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's cabinet at the end of last year to join the Supreme Court, issued a ruling on Sunday authorizing the federal government to use extraordinary loans to finance measures against wildfires that are destroying forest areas in several biomes in the country.

👉 Why it is important. Brazil is currently experiencing the worst drought in its recent history and a record number of forest fires have occurred in several regions.

License to distribute. According to Judge Dino's ruling, the funds used for emergency response to the forest fires will be outside the spending ceiling and will not be included in the calculation of Brazil's budget targets (this year the government must achieve a zero-deficit budget).
