Apple launches macOS Sequoia with iPhone mirroring, password app, window splitting updates, and more

Apple today released macOS 15 Sequoia, the latest version of the operating system designed for the Mac. macOS Sequoia is a free update available for download on the 2018 and later MacBook Pro, 2020 and later MacBook Air, 2018 and later Mac mini, all Mac Studio models, 2019 and later iMac, and the ‌iMac‌ Pro.


Mac users can download the macOS Sequoia update from the Software Update section of System Preferences. Apple has also released macOS 13.7 and 14.7 updates for those who can't upgrade to Sequoia.

‌macOS Sequoia‌ offers iPhone Mirroring, which lets you control and monitor your ‌iPhone‌ right from your Mac. You can use your ‌iPhone‌'s apps and receive your ‌iPhone‌'s notifications while your ‌iPhone‌ is tucked away and locked.

Window arrangement has been improved to make it easier to arrange multiple windows on your Mac's display, and there are new keyboard and menu shortcuts for organizing your windows. In Safari, Highlights now shows you the information you need most from websites, and there's a new Viewer mode for watching videos in privacy.

The Messages app supports new text effects, scheduling, and tapbacks with any emoji, while the Notes app has Math Notes integration for automatically solving equations, Apple Maps supports hiking trails and lets you create your own custom routes, there are new features for the AirPods Pro 2, and Apple has added a dedicated Passwords app for managing your iCloud passwords and logins.

There are Apple Intelligence features like writing tools, Image Playground, Genmoji, and more that will be coming to ‌macOS Sequoia‌, but these updates aren't included in the first version of the new software and won't roll out until later this year. macOS Sequoia introduces new features to help you be more productive and creative on Mac. The newest Continuity feature, iPhone Mirroring, lets you access your entire iPhone on Mac. It's easy to arrange windows side by side to quickly create your ideal workspace, and Presenter Overlay even lets you see what you want to share during a presentation. A big update to Safari brings distraction control, Highlights, and a redesigned Reader so you can easily get things done while browsing the web. macOS Sequoia also brings text effects and emoji Tapbacks to Messages, math notes to the Calculator, the ability to plan a hike in Maps, and more.

– Improvements to tiled windows make it easier to arrange windows by dragging them to the edge of the screen to place them side by side or in the corners of your desktop
– Using keyboard and menu shortcuts, windows can be arranged in tile positions even faster

– Distraction Control lets you hide elements on a web page that you find distracting while browsing
– Highlights display important information about the website you are visiting with summaries, locations and more
– The redesigned Reader offers even more ways to enjoy articles, with an optimized view of the article you are reading, a summary and a table of contents for longer articles
– The viewer lets you watch videos without distraction and automatically moves videos to picture-in-picture view when you click away from the page

Passwords
– The Passwords app lets you see all your login information for websites and apps in one place, making it even easier to access your passwords, passkeys, Wi-Fi passwords, and verification codes
– Verification codes can be set up directly in Passwords, so you can easily copy them or have them automatically entered into Safari without having to open the app
– Secure sync ensures that your accounts stored in passwords are seamlessly synced to iCloud with end-to-end encryption so you can access them on your other devices
– Windows support through the iCloud Passwords app so you can access your passwords on Windows devices

Video conferences
– Presenter Overlay allows you to preview your screen before sharing it in video calls
– Playback Preview gives you a preview of where your content and presenter notes will appear when you click Play in Keynote.
– Background swap allows you to upload your own photo or choose from several built-in options to use as the background for your video call

News
– Text Effects bring your conversations to life by visually enhancing every letter, word, phrase, or emoji in iMessage with dynamic, animated effects like exploding, rippling, and nodding.
– Text formatting allows you to add bold, underline, italics, and strikethrough to any letter, word, or phrase in iMessage.
– Emoji and sticker Tapbacks let you react to a message with any emoji or sticker, giving you one-swipe access to the Tapbacks you and your friends send most often.
– With “Send Later” you can now compose a message and schedule it to be sent later

Cards
– Topographic maps show features such as hiking trails, contour lines, elevations and points of interest
– Hikes are available in all US national parks and can be saved to your device for offline access
– You can create customized walking and hiking routes for walks in the park, regular exercise routines in your neighborhood, hiking tours on vacation and more
– The Places Library brings together all your saved places, travel guides and hiking routes in one place for easy access

Notes
– Audio recordings can be started directly from a note and stored with associated comments, checklists and documents
– Live transcriptions are displayed while you record audio and transcripts are fully searchable so you can always find what you need
– Math in Notes allows you to enter expressions in your note to have them solved immediately
– Collapsible sections help you simplify and hide text in long notes. Simply click next to a section heading to break up your most text-heavy notes.
– Highlight text in your note with a choice of five colors to make your text stand out

Photos
– Collections automatically organize your library by helpful themes in the sidebar, such as Days, Travel, People & Pets, and Featured Photos
– Groups in People & Pets contain photos of your favorite people or pets that often appear together
– Video Speed ​​Control allows you to slow down high frame rate video content with in and out points
– Utilities include additional helpful collections like documents, receipts, and more, as well as items you've recently edited, viewed, and shared
– Recovered Album in Utilities displays images that are on your device but were previously not visible in a locked album due to database corruption

Apple TV App
