Pearl Fire northwest of Red Feather Lakes is the latest wildfire in Colorado

The Pearl Lakes wildfire is raging northwest of Fort Collins near the Crystal Lakes residential area.

Evacuations have been ordered in the region.

According to the Larimer County Sheriff's Office, the Pearl Fire is burning south of Black Mountain and north of Lake Erie. The area is about an hour northwest of Fort Collins and 20 minutes northwest of Red Feather Lakes.

Firefighting aircraft have dropped extinguishing agents on the fire, the flames of which are visible from several surveillance cameras in the area.

The size of the fire is estimated at 78 acres

According to a Larimer County Sheriff's Office post on X.com, the Pearl Fire was estimated to be 78 acres in size and 0% contained as of 2:35 p.m. Monday.

Three firefighting planes and three helicopters are currently in use, along with 50 people. Additional personnel have been requested, the sheriff's office said.

In a Facebook post, Sheriff John Feyen said the fire had been mapped.

He listed resources including one very large tanker aircraft, two large tanker aircraft, two single-engine tanker aircraft and several helicopters.

He said the sheriff's office was not aware of any affected buildings.

Residents near Pearl Fire share their fear

Eric Creighton, a resident of Red Feather Lakes, told a Coloradoan reporter about his experience listening to the sirens of emergency vehicles driving toward the smoke.

“It's just that fear. You see the fire burning, and then the wind can change direction, and then you become the next victim of the fires,” Creighton said.

He's been here 24 years now and has been through this before.

“When you have to move out of home and take all your important things with you and then don’t know what will happen, it brings with it a certain amount of fear.”

Use of air resources during the Pearl Fire

A tanker has been ordered from the Colorado Division of Fire Protection & Control, the agency said on its Facebook page.

The company reported that its Type 1 helicopter was also being used against the fire brigade.

The National Interagency Fire Center says the size of the fire is 200 acres and was reported at 11:17 a.m. Monday.

Red Feather Elementary School closes early due to evacuation

Red Feather Elementary School dismissed students at 1 p.m. because of the nearby Pearl Fire. A school bus is at the school to transport any students not picked up by their parents or guardians by 1:30 p.m. to Livermore Elementary School, PSD spokeswoman Emily Shockley said.

The school was not in an evacuation zone at the time, but just outside a mandatory evacuation zone to the west and a voluntary evacuation zone to the north.

PSD Mountain Schools Superintendent Tom Schachet has contacted the families of all students at the school to make sure they are aware of the early dismissal, Shockley said.

All students were picked up at school by their parents or guardians and none had to be bused to Livermore, Shockley said in a text message at 2 p.m. All students and staff left school at 2 p.m.

Animal evacuation center set up for Pearl Fire

A large animal evacuation center has been set up at the Ranch, the Larimer County Fair and Event Center, at 5280 Arena Circle in Loveland.

NoCo Humane accepts animals larger than goats at its Larimer campus at 3501 E. 71st St. in Loveland, near the Northern Colorado Regional Airport.

A voluntary evacuation area north of Black Mountain to the state line has been declared mandatory. Residents are urged to evacuate immediately.
