Mother accused of running over her daughter at Cedar Glen Apartments pleads not guilty

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) – The mother accused of running over her 8-year-old daughter in a South Bend apartment complex late last month is pleading not guilty to the charges against her.

Jasmine White, 27, is charged with neglect of a dependent person resulting in serious injury and neglect of a dependent person (placing the dependent person in a dangerous situation) for her role in the August 29 incident at Cedar Glen Apartments.

The 8-year-old girl was taken to the hospital in critical condition after her foot became stuck under the rear tire of her mother's moving car, according to investigators, knocking her to the ground and suffering severe head injuries.

According to court documents, witnesses told police that the 8-year-old and several of her siblings were walking alongside a Chevrolet Equinox driven by White at the time of the incident.

According to police, one of the siblings, a six-year-old, told investigators that this was part of a game that White regularly played: She would run to the car with the children, lock the doors and pretend to leave them there.

The six-year-old said White was driving faster than normal this time and the eight-year-old girl was holding on to the door handle when she was hit, fell to the ground and hit her head.

According to MyCase, White appeared in court on Monday and entered a preliminary plea of ​​not guilty. Her bail was also set at $50,000.

White is due back in court for another hearing on September 27.
