Jane's Addicton tour canceled after Perry Farrell punches Dave Navarro – NBC Chicago

Following a viral onstage brawl that was caught entirely on video, Jane's Addiction announced Monday that it is canceling the remainder of its U.S. tour, including a planned stop in Chicago.

The cancellation came in the form of two separate announcements, one posted on the band's Instagram page and the other on guitarist Dave Navarro's account on Monday morning.

Jane's Addiction wrote in their Instagram post “to all fans” that they had “made the difficult decision to take a break as a group” and planned to cancel the rest of their tour.

Navarro's Instagram post also announced that the band would be “cancelling” the tour, citing a “ongoing pattern of behavior and the mental health issues of our signee Perry Farrell.”

The announcement came shortly after a viral video from Jane's Addiction's Friday night show in Boston showed a visibly upset Farrell shoulder-shaking and slapping Navarro while he performed a song onstage.

“We see no solution that would either ensure a safe environment on stage or allow us to reliably deliver a great performance every night,” Navarro's post continued. “Our concern for his personal health and safety, as well as our own, leaves us no other choice. We hope he finds the help he needs.”

The message ends with the words “Our hearts are broken” and is signed by Navarro, bass guitarist Eric Avery and drummer Stephen Perkins.

Jane's Addiction, known for their edgy, punk-inspired hits “Been Caught Stealing” and “Mountain Song” in the late 1980s and early 1990s, were scheduled to stop at Chicago's Byline Bank Aragon Ballroom on Tuesday, September 24 as part of their “Imminent Redemption” U.S. tour.

As of Monday 10:30am, the show has been removed from the list of upcoming shows on the venue's website.

What happened on stage at the Jane's Addiction concert in Boston?

In videos posted on social media from Friday night's concert in Boston, Farrell, 65, can be seen singing loudly into his microphone before lunging at Navarro, shoulder-butting him and then striking him with his right arm. Navarro extends his right arm to keep Farrell at bay before he is dragged away by others on stage.

The show ended shortly afterwards.

The band reportedly issued an apology for the dispute on their Instagram story on Saturday night. The statement went on to say that the band would be canceling their upcoming show in Bridgeport, Connecticut due to the incident.

Hours after the fight, Navarro himself posted a cryptic message on Instagram – a black and white portrait of himself on stage with the caption “Goodnight.”

What was the reason for the fight and why did Farrell beat Navarro?

The scuffle occurred amid “tension and hostility” during their reunion tour, Perry's wife Etty Lau Farrell said on Instagram on Saturday.

“Perry's frustration grew night after night. He felt that the volume on stage was extremely high and his voice was being drowned out by the band,” Etty Lau Farrell wrote in an Instagram post on Saturday morning.

She said her husband suffered from tinnitus and a sore throat and “by the end of the song he was no longer singing but screaming just to be heard.” She said her husband later burst into tears “and cried and cried.”

What's next for Jane's Addiction?

On the band's recent US tour, the band performed for the first time since 2010 in the classic line-up with Perry (65), Navarro (57), Avery (59) and drummer Perkins (57).
