2 teens arrested after shooting near Brevard County Middle School – WFTV

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – The Brevard County Sheriff's Office said it has made two arrests following an after-school shooting near a middle school.

The shooting occurred Thursday near Johnson Middle School in the area of ​​Carlton Drive and Croton Road near Melbourne.

Officials said a 17-year-old took the gun the 14-year-old was carrying in his waistband and then fired a shot into the air.

Investigators said at least one person was injured as people tried to escape the shooting.

During the incident, the nearby Johnson Middle School campus was briefly locked down. A shelter was later set up there while the Brevard County Sheriff's Office responded to the incident.

Officials said the gun drawn in the incident was stolen from Palm Bay.

The sheriff's office said the incident did not begin near the Johnson Middle School campus but continued down a busy shortcut street where a shot was fired.

The Brevard County School District said it is offering counseling to any students who need it, even though the incident occurred off school grounds.

Deputies said neither the 17-year-old nor the 14-year-old attended a public school in Brevard.

The sheriff's office said the teens are accused of firing a firearm within 300 meters of a school.
