Updated – Jury selection has begun in the trial of a Ventura County man accused of torturing and murdering his partner.

Saul Nava, 24, of Thousand Oaks, has pleaded not guilty to nine counts, including aggravated assault, torture and premeditated murder, and denied more than 30 specific charges.

The charges and specific allegations relate not only to her death, but also to the apparently massive domestic violence that led to her death.

Nava also faces additional charges, including kidnapping and possession of child pornography

On Christmas Eve 2021, officers and paramedics responded to a residence in the 600 block of McCloud Avenue in Thousand Oaks, where they found 24-year-old Alisen Escobar beaten to death.

Authorities found that she had been tortured and suffered serious injuries before she was killed.

Nava was arrested at the scene.

On Monday, the first groups of potential jurors were brought into court. They were given a questionnaire to fill out and told to return to court next week.

This process is repeated until the court believes there are enough potential jurors to begin selecting twelve jurors and several alternates.

Nava, the lawyers and the judge will appear in court again on Tuesday to repeat the process.

Meanwhile, Nava remains in jail and is being held without bail.
