Chiefs running back Isiah Pacheco out for at least 6 weeks after surgery

Kansas City Chiefs running back Isiah Pacheco will be out for at least six weeks after undergoing surgery to repair a broken fibula, NFL Network and ESPN reported.

Pacheco will undergo surgery this week. The Chiefs are expected to place him on the injured list.

Pacheco was injured on Sunday in Kansas City's 26-25 win over the Cincinnati Bengals.

“I talked to him twice last night, so I think he's doing better than he was,” head coach Andy Reid said Monday. “He's a guy who loves the game. He had tears in his eyes. He was emotional. But you never want to lose control. It's an emotional sport, and this kid, nobody likes playing more than him.”

Pacheco, 25, is in his third year with the Chiefs. He has been the team's leading runner for the past two seasons. In 14 games last year, he ran for 935 yards and scored seven touchdowns. He also caught 44 passes for 244 yards and scored two touchdowns.

So far this season, Pacheco has rushed for 135 yards on 34 runs.

The next running back on Kansas City's roster is rookie Carson Steele, and he will be backed up by veteran Semaje Perine. Running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire, who appeared in 14 games last season, is out until at least Week 5 after beginning the season on the non-football injured list.

The Chiefs will also bring running back Kareem Hunt for a visit on Tuesday, ESPN reported.

Hunt was drafted by Kansas City in 2017 and played 27 games for the team. He was released in 2018 after he was filmed shoving and kicking a woman in a Cleveland hotel. He has spent the last five seasons with the Cleveland Browns.

The Chiefs trail 2-0 after their win over the Bengals and will play against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 3 on Sunday Night Football.
