Parents raise concerns after fight at Freedom High School in Oakley – NBC Bay Area

A fight on the campus of Oakley Freedom High School in Contra Costa County has unsettled some parents.

The incident, which occurred Friday night, was captured on video and showed a fight and one student chasing another with a knife.

Miguel Meza told NBC Bay Area that his son attends Freedom High School and immediately texted him.

“This is definitely disturbing and scary,” Meza said. “Something happened. There was a fight at the school. Someone pulled out a knife and everyone started running.”

Meza said his teen and other students ran to escape the dangerous fight. Meza texted his son to stay out of it and that violence in schools is very real.

“Of course, that worried me as a father because I wasn’t there and didn’t know anything about it,” he said.

Freedom High School Principal Steve Amaro witnessed the incident and immediately notified parents and found that the student was arrested.

Amaro said he was disappointed, but added that the children are not discouraged by the actions of a few. It is homecoming week and he said spirits are high.

“This will impact the community, but we will move on and get back on our feet because we have that resilience,” he said.

Iris Castro said she was worried when she dropped off her first child today, but she, too, is trying to look forward.

“You always have that little worry in the back of your mind about what might happen in a fight, a shooting, all those things go through your mind, but we just have to move on and live our lives,” she said.
