Murder suspect still unidentified after Andrea Denkins was shot and killed at Haverstock Hills Apartments on Aldine Bender Road

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) — A grandmother of four was shot and killed in her home in northeast Harris County on Monday morning.

Investigators with the Harris County Sheriff's Office said the woman, identified by her family as Andrea Denkins, was shot multiple times around 6 a.m. The shooting occurred at the Haverstock Hills Apartments near Aldine Bender Road.

A bullet pierced a neighboring apartment and grazed the hair of a man who was sleeping in a bunk bed with his girlfriend and two children.

“This is just what this place is known for,” said Denkins' daughter Jasmine Johnson. “This place really needs to be shut down.”

In 2010, a judge issued the first civil gang injunction in Harris County, barring known gang members from entering the Haverstock Hills Apartments.

Eight years later, Prairie View A&M has launched a public safety initiative on the property.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office has also set up a satellite office within the complex. The HCSO said the building is not staffed 24/7 but is used by officers responding to emergency calls.

“Now my mother is part of those Haverstock statistics,” Johnson said.

The sheriff's office said four people were in Denkin's apartment at the time of the shooting. They said the four were cooperative and have been ruled out as suspects.

According to Denin's family, the 55-year-old was a mother of two and grandmother of four. According to relatives, she never met the youngest of them, a newborn.

“She had a heart of gold. You knew she would give you the shirt off your back. She would feed you. Anything you needed, she would give you. She didn't have much, but you had it when she got it,” Johnson said of her mother.
