“I will probably be emotional” when I return to Europe

Aston Villa fans are looking forward to Tuesday's Champions League opening match against Young Boys (17:45 CEST), and fan Luke believes he “might be in tears” as he watches the team's first game in Europe's premier club competition since 1983.

“I'll probably get quite emotional. I don't know how I'll feel when they all line up and play the anthem. That's great for a fan who's never seen your team in Europe's biggest football competition,” he told the Football News Show.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live's Breakfast show, Villa fan Becky Fielding said: “It's so exciting – after being relegated back to the Championship and having some of the worst seasons ever.”

“It's a dream come true – not only for me, but also for my children. They have been following them since they were children and now they get the chance to watch Champions League football.”

BBC Radio World Cup reporter Mike Taylor was in Bern and met some fans.

“This is a big deal for the club, a big step forward for us. The Europa Conference last season was a good taste of European football – but this is the big deal,” said one fan.

Alistair Bruce-Ball will commentate on the game live on BBC Radio 5 Live and spoke about the impact of the artificial pitch at Young Boys and the changes it brought to Villa's plans.

“That's exactly why they travelled here earlier than they would have for an away game in Europe. Manchester City did the same thing last season.”
