Two semi-trailers collide in Nye County, triggering lithium battery fire

NYE COUNTY, Nevada (KOLO) – An accident involving two semi-trucks in Nye County closed a portion of US95 and caused a lithium battery fire.

The Nevada Highway Patrol said the trucks crashed around midnight Monday on US95 and mile marker 13 between Mercury and State Route 160 in Nye County.

According to their preliminary investigation, the two trucks, one traveling northbound and the other southbound, were involved in a side-on collision.

The cause has not been determined.

According to NHP, one of the semi-trailers was loaded with lumber while the second was hauling lithium batteries that caught fire in the accident. The fire has since been extinguished.

Both drivers suffered minor injuries.

A hazardous materials response team has been dispatched to the area and local authorities are working to secure the area. US95 will remain closed in the area during cleanup efforts.

Southbound traffic will be diverted via SR160 to Pahrump, while northbound traffic will be reversed in Indian Springs.
