Fall colors in Colorado: When and where are the most beautiful yellow leaves?

Typically, colors in the northern mountains of Colorado reach their peak in September. The central mountains reach their peak in the last week of the month.

COLORADO, USA – Fall is one of the most beautiful seasons to live in Colorado.

Mountain slopes turn stunning shades of gold, orange and red. Sometimes it seems as if it happens almost overnight.

Leaves change color every fall when they stop photosynthesising so they can rest for the winter when there isn't enough sunlight. The green chlorophyll fades, leaving behind the other colors that were hidden the rest of the year.

Typically, colors in Colorado's northern mountains peak in September. The central mountains peak in the last week of the month. In our southern mountains, it's the first week of October.

Warm weather in Colorado has pushed back the start of the fall color season by a few days in 2024. In the mountains of northern Colorado, the first yellow aspens will be seen around September 20th.

Below is a map of expected peak temperatures from the 9NEWS Weather Impact Team.
