Innocent bystander killed in crash as driver flees Hamilton County Sheriff's Office

CINCINNATI (WXIX) – An innocent bystander has died after his vehicle was struck by a driver attempting to escape from a Hamilton County Sheriff's Office corporal.

According to the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office, 33-year-old James Khalid of Cincinnati is accused of causing the accident that killed 72-year-old Ricky Mills.

The accident occurred at the intersection of W. Kemper Road and Pippin Road.

Before the crash, the sheriff's office said, Cpl. Shane Wiseman began pursuing a vehicle with 13 warrants for its license plate at around 5 p.m. Monday, heading north on Hamilton Avenue near Interstate 275 in Colerain Township.

Khalid's vehicle struck the sides of another vehicle and then crashed into Mills' vehicle at the Kemper-Pippin Road intersection, the Hamilton County Sheriff said.

According to the sheriff's office, the chase lasted about one minute and 35 seconds and covered a distance of 2.5 kilometers.

Khalid was seriously injured in the accident and is now in hospital under the supervision of officials.

The Hamilton County Sheriff's Office says it is leading the investigation into the chase, while the Colerain Township Police Department is handling the accident investigation and subsequent charging.

Monday's accident has left Ricky Mills' family devastated and in shock.

“When he didn’t come home from work as scheduled, we realized something was wrong,” explained his son Doug Mills.

The Mills family wants people to remember Ricky as a man who cared for everyone and was always willing to help in any way he could.
