Secret Service chief says agency needs change and Sean “Diddy” Combs has been arrested: Morning Rundown

More details are emerging about the alleged assassination attempt on Donald Trump. Sean “Diddy” Combs has been arrested and now faces charges in federal court. And a storm is moving up the East Coast after flooding North Carolina.

This is what you should know today.

Head of the Secret Service makes remarkable admissions after apparent threat to Trump's life

The US intelligence community needs a “paradigm shift,” the agency's acting director said a day after the apparent assassination attempt on Donald Trump, the second in two months. Ronald Rowe's comments are a remarkable admission about the 160-year-old agency, which has been under scrutiny since the gunman fired several shots at Trump at a Pennsylvania rally in July, hitting the former president in the ear.

The suspected shooter arrested in Florida on Sunday, Ryan Wesley Routh, appeared in court yesterday. He is charged with possession of a firearm as a convicted felon and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number. Routh was not charged with attempted murder of Trump.

Court documents revealed that during Sunday's incident, Routh camped out in a wooded area near the Florida golf course with an SKS rifle for 12 hours before a Secret Service agent shot him. Trump was not in Routh's line of sight when the agent “attacked” him, Rowe said.

In a self-published book, Routh wrote that he voted for Trump in 2016 and regretted it after the US withdrew from the nuclear deal with Iran in 2018. Read more about Routh's background.

Now Congress is considering increasing funding for the Secret Service. One option would be to attach the emergency funds to a short-term funding bill that Congress must pass by Sept. 30 to avert a government shutdown. But some lawmakers, including a close Trump ally, are adamant that the agency does not need more money. Read more about what lawmakers had to say about Secret Service funding.

The Secret Service has dramatically increased Trump's security measures since the July 13 shooting, including adding more personnel and more technology. Yesterday, the Trump campaign asked for even more security measures, two sources said. Read more about Rowe's comments following Sunday's incident.

Further coverage of the alleged assassination attempt on Trump:

  • Bodycam video shows Routh being taken into custody.
  • Trump and his running mate, Senator JD Vance, ignored calls for unity and claimed that Democrats' rhetoric was responsible for threats and violence against the former president.
  • Elon Musk said in his now-deleted X-post that “no one is even trying to assassinate President Joe Biden or Vice President Kamala Harris.” was meant as a joke.

An indictment against Sean “Diddy” Combs is expected to be released this morning after the rapper-turned-music mogul was arrested in New York yesterday, U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said. A person familiar with the situation said Combs was taken completely by surprise by the arrest. Combs “voluntarily moved to New York last week to face these charges,” said his attorney, Marc Agnifilo, who expressed disappointment at the arrest. Combs “is an imperfect human being, but not a criminal,” the statement said.

It was not immediately clear what charges Combs was arrested on, but he has faced a wave of lawsuits since November, one of which came in just last week accusing him of sexual harassment and misconduct. Here’s what else we know:

Storm moves inland after flooding in parts of North Carolina

An unnamed storm that dumped more than a foot of rain in parts of North Carolina is expected to move across Virginia, West Virginia and Maryland today and bring showers to eastern Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey and southern New York tomorrow, forecasters said. The National Hurricane Center designated the disturbance a potential Tropical Cyclone 8. It will likely weaken as it moves across the terrain and has virtually no chance of being named.

Still, the disturbance drenched North Carolina's southeast coast, leaving 18 inches of rain measured at Carolina Beach and more than 14 inches in Southport, the National Weather Service said. Officials also reported damaged buildings and weather-related road closures.

Amazon asks its employees to return to the office full-time

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy is ending the company's hybrid model, telling employees in a notice published yesterday that they must return to the office full-time. Amazon joins a growing list of major U.S. companies returning to a five-day-a-week office policy.

Harris Interview: Three members of the National Association of Black Journalists will interview Vice President Kamala Harris today. Six weeks ago, Trump questioned Harris' ethnicity and clashed with a journalist at the organization's national convention.

Third party candidates: The swing states of Michigan and Wisconsin will have the most crowded presidential ballots, which could be of great importance in a close election. This is how other swing states fare.

Healthcare: Donald Trump has tried to portray himself as someone who chose to protect the Affordable Care Act rather than repeal it. A look at his actions and quotes during his time in office show that the facts are misrepresented.
