Severe thunderstorms and strong winds forecast in Colorado

Tuesday is a 9NEWS weather day with the possibility of widespread winds over 60 mph along the Front Range and 70-80 mph in northeast Colorado.

DENVER – Tuesday is a weather-influenced day in Colorado.

Tuesday afternoon, winds over 60 mph are possible across northern and eastern Colorado, including the Front Range. Winds of 70-80 mph are possible across the northeastern Plains.

The main danger on Tuesday will be almost exclusively damaging winds over 60 mph, with gusts of 50-60 mph possible in Denver.

The strong storms are expected to move through between 1 and 6 p.m. Tuesday, although it looks like the Denver area will experience these storms more toward the early end of that window, perhaps more likely between 1 and 3 p.m.

Bring all garden furniture into the house and tie down anything that could come loose outside.

Highs will be in the 30s on Tuesday before clouds move in around midday in Denver, a few degrees above average.

Colorado will see calmer weather on Wednesday, with highs just above 80 degrees (average 77 degrees) and dry conditions through Friday before the state's next major storm arrives, bringing significantly cooler weather and the possibility of heavy rain and snowfall in the mountains, especially on Saturday and Sunday.

Computer forecast models are not entirely in agreement about how far south the next storm system will extend, but there is increasing evidence that it could be a low-elevation storm, and that significant snowfall could occur this weekend at elevations above 10,000 feet (perhaps even lower).

Otherwise, temperatures will be the big issue during the next storm, with highs in Denver falling to just over 18 to under 25 degrees Celsius on both days this weekend.

We'll keep you updated on the next storm in the coming days, but in the meantime, watch out for the strong storms this afternoon, they could be severe.
