Harry Kane breaks Wayne Rooney's impressive Champions League record

Another game by FC Bayern Munich, another record broken by Harry Kane.

Days after breaking Erling Haaland's record for the fastest goal involvement in the Bundesliga, he is now in the Champions League.

On the opening day, the German giants were awarded a duel with Dinamo Zagreb and Kane was in no mood to fool around.

With a 19th-minute penalty at the Allianz Arena, he equalled Wayne Rooney's record of 30 goals – the most by an English player in the competition – in 40 fewer games.

Kane had already scored 21 goals for Tottenham in this competition, including eight last season, and before the home game against the Croatian champions his tally was 29.

In his 45th Champions League game, he completed this number with a penalty.

Aleksandar Pavlovic was knocked over in the penalty area and although Serge Gnabry put the ball into the net, he was offside.

This allowed the first challenge to be analyzed and a penalty awarded to Kane, who shot the ball high into the net.

Goals from Raphael Gurreiro and Michael Olise gave Vincent Kompany’s team a convincing 3-0 lead at half-time.

The visitors threatened to complete an unlikely comeback with two goals in the first five minutes of the second half.

But Kane restored Bayern's lead in the 57th minute, capitalising on the rebound after Joshua Kimmich's fierce shot was deflected straight into his path.

In the 61st minute, Olise scored his second goal of the game and gave Bayern a 5-2 lead.

And Kane wasn't done there, as he scored his hat-trick with a penalty in the 73rd minute and added another five minutes later with his third penalty of the night.

Kane is proving to be a valuable asset following his £86.4 million transfer from Spurs in 2023.

Although Bayern Munich failed to win a trophy last season, Kane scored 36 goals in 32 league games to win the European Golden Shoe.

Darren Bent admits he would rather have Jamie Vardy's club career than Harry Kane's

This alone is a record as it means that Kane has scored the most goals in his debut season, adding to his impressive collection.

Before his big transfer to the Bundesliga giants, he was already Tottenham's and England's record goalscorer.

Kane's creativity should not be forgotten either; he has assisted on nine Champions League goals.

What makes Kane's record even more impressive is the fact that Rooney scored his 30 goals in 85 games.

However, Manchester United’s record goalscorer also provided 21 assists during this time.
