Man arrested on suspicion of stalking UConn star Paige Bueckers

An Oregon man has been arrested and accused of stalking and harassing University of Connecticut star basketball player Paige Bueckers.

ESPN, The Oregonian and local Connecticut station WFSB report that Robert Parmalee was arrested and faced an online judge on Monday on charges of electronic stalking, harassment and disturbing the peace.

The stalking charge is a felony. Parmalee, 40, has not yet pleaded guilty and remains in custody on $100,000 bail, according to records reviewed by PEOPLE.

According to WFSB, the judge told Parmalee that if he were released on bail, he would not be allowed to go to Mansfield, where the UConn campus is located, and that he would be prohibited from having any contact with 22-year-old Bueckers.

According to ESPN, UConn campus police became aware of Parmalee in June after he allegedly sent a handful of disturbing, “incoherent” emails to university staff.

The newspaper quoted police as saying that Parmalee allegedly claimed in the emails that he was a member of the royal family and wanted to marry a member of the UConn women's basketball team.

According to ESPN, university police claim Parmalee also made a number of troubling social media posts, including some threatening Bueckers' family. The portal reported that Parmalee wrote on his TikTok account: “And if I can't live with a woman of my choosing, [Bueckers]then I will choose death, and I will choose to take all of you who [op]Face me, face us, go to hell, and return, king…”

Another social media post allegedly included a fake wedding invitation and an apparent diamond ring, according to ESPN.

WFSB reports that Parmalee was arrested on August 27 while driving along a highway in Windsor Locks, Connecticut, near Bradley International Airport and about 30 miles from UConn's Mansfield campus. The newspaper reports that he was arrested on a warrant out of Oregon in which police were looking for him on arson charges for allegedly trying to burn down his home while his roommate was inside.

According to ESPN, citing an arrest warrant affidavit, Parmalee began sending videos of herself directly to Bueckers via Instagram in February. The senior point guard went to UConn campus police to tell them she was concerned for her and her family's safety, the source said.

According to ESPN, neither Bueuckers nor the UConn basketball team will comment on the case. Parmalee is scheduled to appear in court again on October 22.

According to court documents, a temporary restraining order was also issued against Parmalee on Monday.
