Woman says she found suspect accused of murdering Kentucky deputy sheriff dead in her home

RUSSELL SPRINGS, Ky. (WKYT) – There are still many questions about what caused Monday night's violence at a trailer park in Russell Springs.

One woman said that when she came home she found a dead man inside and her trailer was in terrible condition.

Others in the city say the chaos that erupted in a nearby park left them fearful the violence could spread to them.

“I just came home and found a disaster,” said Rita Campbell.

Campbell is thankful she wasn't home when shots rang out in her trailer park Monday night, and she couldn't believe what had become of her house or what or who she found inside.

“A guy shot a cop and the guy then ran to my mobile home. That's where his life ended,” said Campbell, who lives in the Lakeway Mobile Home Court on Bluebird Lane.

Campbell says the windows of her house were smashed and there were bullet holes in the trees outside. She says there were police everywhere. And there was a dead man in her house.

“Apparently they caught him when he came into the hallway and the bedroom. That's where most of the blood is,” Campbell said.

While Campbell wonders how she will clean up and repair her house, parents at a nearby park wonder why the violence in the trailer park has become a report of an active shooter.

“When we finally got to the dugout, there were parents sitting their kids under the bench,” Keli Jones said.

“I saw a small community pull together to protect everyone's children. Not just their own, you know. And then once we got all the kids out of the park and picked up everything else, the parents just pulled together to protect their children,” Tara Robertson said.

The city park is nearly two miles from the trailer park. Local officials say the confusion may have been caused by police or radio traffic in the trailer park, and some thought they heard “city park.”
