Granddaughter charged with murder of grandparents

Charges have been filed against the granddaughter of an elderly Florida couple who was found dead in March. PEOPLE reports.

On Thursday (12 September), the 38-year-old Jalisa Hill was arrested and charged with two counts of premeditated murder in connection with the murder of her grandparents, Significant89, and Claudette Melvin85. Maurice NewsonThe 30-year-old faces the same charges, in addition to one count of robbery with a firearm.

The Melvins, who had 28 grandchildren, were found dead in their home on March 22, Fort Lauderdale police previously said. When police arrived at the scene, officers discovered their vehicle was missing. The car was found at a tow yard in May, police said.

Newson was believed to have sold the vehicle to the tow truck company and was initially arrested for car theft and receiving stolen goods. He pleaded not guilty to those charges and was released on bail.

Police said they later obtained more sufficient evidence and charged Newson with murder. Authorities said they were convinced Hill “collaborated with Maurice Newson to murder her grandparents.” The two were previously believed to be a couple.
