After 19 months in the hospice, “I still experience this world”

Alexander also gave an update on Politically Georgia on Tuesday. In addition to visiting family, she said, Carter is also watching TV, including coverage of the recent Democratic National Convention, and “eating like a champion.”

“He is as committed and age-appropriate as a 99-year-old would be,” Alexander said.

The Carter Center is asking for birthday wishes via a link on its website and social media platforms.

After his 99th birthday, Jason Carter showed his grandfather a mosaic created from that year's birthday greetings.

“And I said, 'Papa Paw, we have these birthday wishes for you.' And he said, 'From who?'” Jason Carter recalled. “I said, 'Papa Paw, there were about 20,000 people. And … I said they came from over 100 countries. And he thought about it for a moment, and then he got teary, and he said, '100 countries.' You know, and you can imagine that someone who is 99 years old, who has visited more than 100 countries, who has done the things that he has done, his legacy is being carried on by the people sitting up here.”

“He's had a moment to think about what this means. And even though it seems like a small thing, I think it would be great to send him birthday wishes. Last year was certainly meaningful for him, and look – on his 101st birthday, who knows what we'll do – but I think this is good for now.”

Jason Carter, former state senator and Democratic gubernatorial candidate, is chairman of the Carter Center’s board of trustees.
