Pinstripe Pulse

With 12 games of the regular season remaining, the Yankees have the best record in the American League at 87-63. They lead the AL East by three games over the Orioles, who come to the Bronx for three games next week, and the Yankees' magic number to secure a postseason spot is three. Aaron Judge has hit two home runs in his last three games, including his game-winning grand slam Friday against Boston, and has hit 53 home runs this season, which is an MLB record. Judge also leads the majors with 132 RBI and is second to Kansas City's Bobby Witt Jr. in the other AL Triple Crown category, trailing him by a .332 to .321 batting average. Austin Wells, the Yankees' regular clean-up hitter behind Judge, has a .290 batting average of late with six home runs and 28 RBI in 141 batting appearances, fourth this season and in contention for AL Rookie of the Year honors. Gleyber Torres has established himself as the Yanks' first hitter and has a .323 batting average since Aug. 21, recording at least one hit in 22 of 24 games during that span. Relief pitcher Luke Weaver has a 1.26 ERA in 14 1/3 IP over his last 13 appearances, including two successful save conversions.

How about this

Thursday's 2-1 win over Boston was a rare victory for the Yankees. Gleyber Torres became the team's first batter to hit a home run in the stadium, and they scored their second run off the game's last batter when Juan Soto hit a walk-off RBI single in the 10th inning to bring home pinch-runner Jon Berti, who automatically entered overtime as a runner. That's the first run scored, dating back to 1974. only Time in which the Yankees won a game while scoring all their points on both their first And last batter.

Know the enemies

The Mariners, with a 77-73 record, are just two games behind Minnesota in the battle for the third AL wild card spot, although Detroit is just 1.5 games behind the Twins and Boston is on the fringe of the wild card spots, four games back. Seattle is also just four games behind first-place Houston in the AL West, with three head-to-head meetings remaining between the clubs in Houston. Julio Rodriguez has a .333 batting average and five home runs in his last 17 games. This series marks the first time the Yankees will face former division rival Randy Arozarena since Tampa Bay traded him to Seattle. Arozarena is batting .364 in his last nine games as a member of the Rays against the Yanks, and through Tuesday, six of his last 12 hits have been for extra bases. Victor Robles, who had a .235 batting average in 475 MLB games with Washington, including the postseason, before being signed by Seattle earlier this year, is batting .333 in 227 plate appearances with the Mariners. Closer Andrés Muñoz has just a 2.10 ERA for the season, but he has been scored against in four of his last 10 appearances, even though opponents have only had a .182 batting average against him during that span.

Possible starters

Luis Gil starts tonight against Seattle's Bryan Woo. In his first two starts since coming off the injured list, Gil has thrown 11 innings with one run and 12 strikeouts. Former Mariner Nestor Cortes will start tomorrow against Bryce Miller. Cortes has thrown 9 1/3 innings with one run in his last two appearances, as a relief pitcher with the Cubs and as a start against Boston. Clarke Schmidt and Logan Gilbert are set for Thursday's finale. Schmidt has allowed just two runs in 10 1/3 innings in some starts since returning from the injured list.
