Shooting investigation underway: Maui man dead after accident in Waikapū: Maui Now

Maui Police have launched a shooting investigation following the death of a driver in Waikapū early Monday morning. The victim has since been identified as Shawn Lewis, 42, of Lahaina.

Lewis was reportedly traveling on the Honoapiʻilani Highway in Waikapū on September 16, 2024, when he crashed near Waiolu Place shortly after midnight. The highway was closed for five hours while police investigated.

The original closure was due to a car accident, but the case is currently being classified as a shooting investigation.

At this point in time, the police believe that this is an isolated case.

An unrelated incident in which a man was struck by a bullet while driving on Maui two years ago remains unsolved. In June 2022, a 66-year-old part-time resident was seriously injured when he suffered a gunshot wound to the head while driving on Maui Veterans Highway toward Kīhei. No arrests were made in that case, and police suggested that animals were being hunted and poached in the area as part of their premeditated murder investigation.
