“Emily in Paris” is dead: Long live “Emily in Rome”

The first half Emily in ParisThe fourth season ends with a surprise – Emily Cooper will no longer be in ParisInstead, she will go to Rome: her boss Sylvie (played by Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu) needs Emily to open the new Italian office of her marketing agency.

This step makes no sense. Emily doesn't speak Italian, but two of her colleagues do. And wouldn't there be visa problems? But for the viewer, this step ultimately makes perfect sense. There's a hot guy here.

His name is Marcello, which I had to google. (Except for Emily's name, I have most of the characters' names in the Emily in Paris Universe, and prefers to call her “hot” plus her job. Some examples: hot chef, hot finance brother, and so on.) He's not only hot, he's rich too. He's the heir apparent to a cashmere company modeled on Loro Piana, he plays polo and skis in Megève. And he's not only hot, he's rich too. And He's rich, but also emotionally available. He invites Emily to meet his family (they kissed about twice) and tells her to leave her phone at home. In short: I love Marcello.

And as it turns out, that's true of the entire internet, too. After his character arc aired this weekend, social media was awash with pro-Marcello posts. Most of them are too, um, colorful to quote here, but I'll use the following as an example. When Netflix released a TikTok announcing that the series had been renewed for a fifth season, “There's no place like Rome!” trills Lily Collins, the series' star, while sipping a Emily in Paris– espresso cup with the number 5 on the bottom – the top comment was: “You better stay there, girl.”
