ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) Rookie Eric Wagaman hit a home run for the second straight game, Griffin Canning threw six three-hit innings and the Los Angeles Angels handed the Chicago White Sox their 116th loss with a 5-0 victory Tuesday night.

The White Sox were aiming to match their season record of four straight wins, but instead they came one step closer to the post-1900 major league record of 120 losses set by the New York Mets, who were added to the team in 1962.

Chicago has a 36-116 record with 10 games remaining and the fourth-most losses in a season since 1900. The 2003 Detroit Tigers hold the American League record with 119 losses.

The White Sox were scoreless for the 19th time, the fourth most since 2000, and finished the game with six hits. Only two runners reached second base.

“We just didn't get the momentum going. I thought we had some chances and some good hitting opportunities, but we just couldn't string anything together to get on offense,” said interim manager Grady Sizemore.

The Angels ended a six-game losing streak by scoring in the third through seventh innings and had 10 hits for the first time in five games.

Wagaman completed a 432-foot solo hit to left-center field on a high fastball from Enyel De Los Santos in the sixth inning.

“It was cool to get those first few hits under my belt and hit some home runs,” said Wagaman, who lives 20 minutes south of The Big A in Aliso Viejo and grew up watching the Angels. “It was a lot of fun to have family and friends reach out. We still have 11 games to go, so hopefully we can finish strong.”

Five of Wagaman's six hits resulted in extra bases, including the two home runs. The third baseman also had an RBI single in the fourth inning to make it 2-0.

“He's showing that he has tremendous hitting and ball-touching skills. He's got some power. We'll see where it goes,” manager Ron Washington said.

Canning (6-13) rebounded after allowing 10 runs (nine earned) in his last start at Minnesota on Sept. 10. He managed six strikeouts and two walks and earned his third win since the All-Star break.

“I really didn't make any changes (between starts). I felt like I was better positioned in Minnesota, that's just how the game goes sometimes,” Canning said.

Taylor Ward opened the scoring in the third inning when he beat a base hit by Davis Martin (0-5) to left field, scoring Charles Leblanc. Ward also scored on Jake Eder's wild pitch in the seventh inning.

Nolan Schanuel, who scored on Wagaman's base hit, hit a double to the right outfield wall to bring home Gustavo Campero and extend the Angels' lead to three runs in the fifth inning.

Angels: 2B Michael Stefanic (right calf tightness), 2B Brandon Drury (left thigh tightness) and OF Mickey Moniak (left hand) were out of the lineup for the second day in a row.

The teams will finish their series with a game on Wednesday afternoon. Angels RHP Jack Kochanowicz (2-5, 5.08 ERA) is 0-2 in September. The White Sox will begin with a bullpen game, with RHP Jared Shuster (1-4, 4.54 ERA) starting the first game.
