14-year-old student arrested at McClatchy High School after making social media threats

WE'RE GOING TO JAIL. YOU'RE GOING TO BE HANDCUFFED AND BEING CARRIED AWAY IN FRONT OF ALL YOUR FRIENDS AND CLASSMATES. WE'RE NOT WORRIED ABOUT YOUR FEELINGS AT THIS TIME. YOU HEARD IT RIGHT. A STRONG MESSAGE FROM LAW ENFORCEMENT: THIS WEEK IS ON HIGH ALERT AS OUR REGION CONTINUES TO BE WICKED BY SCHOOL THREATS. SINCE LATE LAST WEEK, MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOLS HAVE BEEN THE TARGET OF THREATS AND SOME STUDENTS HAVE BEEN ARRESTED. BUT WHAT DOES IT REALLY TAKE TO GET THIS FAR? KCRA 3'S ORKO MANNA IS ASKING OFFICERS FOR THAT ANSWER. HE'S WRITING LIVE FROM MCCLATCHY HIGH SCHOOL IN SACRAMENTO WHERE ONE OF THESE THREATS WAS ISSUED. ORKO, I MEAN, KIDS NEED TO KNOW THAT THERE ARE SEVERE CONSEQUENCES. YES. THAT'S RIGHT. LISA. WELL, THE SACRAMENTO POLICE TELLS US THAT THEY ARRESTED A 14-YEAR-OLD GIRL WHO IS A STUDENT HERE AT MCCLATCHY FOR THREATENING A SHOOTING AT A SCHOOL. AND WE'VE LEARNED OF AT LEAST A DOZEN OTHER JUVENILES IN THE AREA WHO HAVE BEEN ARRESTED FOR THREATS IN PLACES LIKE LODI, MANTECA, AND OTHER CITIES IN THE LAST FEW DAYS. AND SO WE WANTED TO LEARN MORE ABOUT HOW LAW ENFORCEMENT DECIDS WHICH THREATS JUSTIFY AN ARREST. SO TODAY WE TALKED TO AMAR GANDHI FROM THE SACRAMENTO COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE. HE TELLS US THERE'S A THREAT MANAGEMENT DEPARTMENT IN THEIR OFFICE THAT DEALS WITH THREATS TO SCHOOLS. GANDHI SAYS TEENS CAN GET SPECIFIC WITH DIFFERENT TYPES OF CHARGES DEPENDING ON THE SEVERITY OF THE THREAT. THEY COULD BE TERRORIST THREATS OR MORE DIFFERENT VERSIONS. IT DEPENDS ON VARIOUS FACTORS, INCLUDING WHAT THEY POST ONLINE, HOW SPECIFIC THEY ARE AND HOW REALISTIC THE THREAT IS. IF A THREAT IS REALISTIC, GANDHI SAYS, HIS OFFICE OFTEN USES SOCIAL MEDIA TO TRACK DOWN THE STUDENTS AND THEN ARREST THEM. WE ASKED IF STUDENTS CAN BE ARRESTED IF DETECTIVES DETERMINE THE THREAT THEY POSTED IS NOT CREDIBLE. Well, the line is blurry, so there's not a clear dividing line. If there is, it's not a very clear A plus B equals C. There are a lot of factors that come into play here. So everything is done very individually. It's decided on a case-by-case basis. So the post itself is not the only determining factor. If there is a realistic threat and we find that person, they're 100% going to jail. And he tells me he didn't want to get too specific about the blurry lines around threat at school because he doesn't want to have teenagers and students trying to figure out how far they can go. Live report from Sacramento by Orko Manna Kcra Three News. So, Orko, are the people who make threats at these schools usually students who go there or students from other schools? Well, Lisa, in many cases, it's students from that school. But that's not always the case. We learned that in Lodi, a high school student was arrested for threatening an elementary school there. And we also know from Gandhi that not all of these threats come from students. SOMETIMES, WHAT THEY ARE, THEY ARE KNOWN AS BAD ACTORS WHO ARE IN FACT ADULTS PRETENDING TO BE TEENS AND STUDENTS JUST TO CAUSE SOME CHAOS. WOW. THAT'S A TERRIBLE THOUGHT TOO. ORKO, THANKS FOR THE LIVE REPORT. MORE TEENS ARE CURRENTLY FACING CHARGES AFTER POSTING THREATS AGAINST SCHOOLS ON THE INTERNET, AND POLICE AND SCHOOL DISTRICT ARE TRYING TO SPREAD THE MESSAGE THAT TEENS WILL BE PROSECUTED FOR THEIR THREATS. THIS IS JUST NOT ACCEPTABLE. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE. ONE ARREST WAS MADE IN GALT, A 15-YEAR-OLD BOY WAS ARRESTED FOR MAKING THREATS AGAINST HIGH SCHOOLS. THE TEENAGER WAS ENTITLED TO A JUVENILE INSTITUTION FOR A SERIOUS CRIME. NOW YOU'VE HEARD ORKO MENTION A 14-YEAR-OLD GIRL WHO WAS ARRESTED FOR MAKING A THREAT AGAINST MCCLATCHY HIGH SCHOOL. SHE WAS A STUDENT AT MCCLATCHY. POLICE SAY THEY ARRESTED THE TEENAGER LAST NIGHT, AND IT'S NOT JUST THE CHILDREN WHO ARE CHARGED. A FATHER WAS CHARGED AFTER HIS SON BROUGHT A GUN TO SCHOOL. POLICE SAY THE STUDENT BROUGHT THE GUN LAST FRIDAY TO WILSIE WOOD MIDDLE SCHOOL. WE WERE TOLD THE GUN WAS FOUND IN THE STUDENT'S BACKPACK. SCHOOL STAFF SECURED THE GUN. THEY REMOVED THE STUDENT FROM THE SCHOOL. THE SACRAMENTO POLICE TAKED CUSTODY OF THE STUDENT. AND TODAY THE POLICE TOLD US
